One of the Town Council’s seven agreed priorities is ‘support for young children and their families’. The Council creates a range of opportunities to work closely with local schools and thereby to stay in touch with how young people feel about their town and what the Council can do to help the local community.
In recent years, the Council has also picked up the tab for funding weekly youth activities at Wellington Youth Centre, although the building itself is owned by the County Council and part of it is let to a pre-school.
The Council also works closely with year six pupils in both Beech Grove and Rockwell Green Primary Schools who annually work on a young citizen’s portfolio.
A Civic Awards ceremony is held each year in one of the town’s churches where the Mayor presents certificates for all children who completed their portfolio, with prizes for the best ones.
