A statement from our mayor, Janet Lloyd.

“When the government announced last year that the early May Bank Holiday would be on Friday 8th May to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day and asked local councils to take the lead in organising events to celebrate this poignant day, none of us had any idea of what would prevent events from taking place.

Plans had gone ahead with local organisations, including Wellington Town Council, booking venues, entertainment and organising suitable refreshments to celebrate in style to mark the occasion. Although all these well planned events have had to be cancelled, it would still be good if everyone can still celebrate in other ways. This could be by having virtual parties via Skype or Zoom with friends and relations or just having a small “party” at home, within your household, to remember the many who made a sacrifice during the Second World War and to have a cup or glass of refreshment at 3.00 pm to celebrate the Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of World War 2.

“To those who gave so much”, we thank you”.

August this year marks the ending of World War 2 in the Far East 75 years ago and perhaps later in the year we will be able to celebrate both 75th anniversaries in a more suitable and appropriate style.”

Janet Lloyd
Mayor of Wellington
